Burnis Mae Leavens, 97, of Bella Vista, Arkansas passed away on April 24, 2026, at Circle of Life Hospice in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Burnis graduated from Wayne State University with a bachelor's degree in education. She taught kindergarten and 1st grade in the Metro Detroit area, retiring from teaching in 1987.

After moving to Bella Vista, she volunteered in many organizations including: Headstart, recycling center, crime watch, meals on wheels, hospital volunteer and Helping Hands.

Burnis was a long-time member of the Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista. She served as an Elder, Deacon, Clerk of Session, and secretary of various committees in addition to teaching Sunday School.

Burnis had a generous heart. She will be remembered for the warmth her smile brought to those around her and for her habit of sending cards to everyone. She was always friendly and willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Burnis was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Leavens of 56 years.

She is survived by her children: Gayle (Tim) Schnepp, Gary (Janet) Leavens, Glen (Kim) Leavens, Gina (John) Nida; her 8 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Bella Vista Presbyterian Church, 1880 Forest Hills Blvd., Bella Vista, AR 72715.
