Carl A. H. (Herb) Schmid, 95, of Bella Vista, Arkansas passed away September 29, 2022, at Highlands Health Care. The son of the late Karl and Lydia Schmid, he was born April 12, 1927, in Tarrytown, New York. He married Marilyn Rehn November 4, 1950, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Bronx, New York.

Herb served in the US Army at the end of WW II as a member of the 82 ^nd Airborne unit based at Fort Bragg, NC. Following his military service, he joined his father in New York at the Aeolian Piano Corporation. In 1951 he assisted his father and cousin to move the manufacturing plant to Memphis, Tennessee where he managed the production of pianos until 1980. He moved to Conway, Arkansas to join Baldwin Pianos and to build a new manufacturing facility in Truman, Arkansas. In 1982 Steinway Pianos recruited him to oversee manufacturing in their Astoria, New York factory. As a trained craftsman, Herb could take the raw lumber from a rail car and completely build a piano ready for tuning.

Following retirement for Steinway, Herb and Lyn moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas to begin their retirement which included travel over the world with many of their Bella Vista church and German American Club friends.

Herb was extremely active in the Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs in Memphis from 1959 to 1980 when he and Lyn moved to Conway, Arkansas. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award and the Lutheran Church Lamb Award for his dedication to the Scouting program. He enjoyed working with wood and many of his woodcarvings won first place at the Mid-South Fair. He also donated multiple sets of hand carved plaques of the symbols of the 12 Apostles to many churches.

Herb leaves his son, Rick (Charlotte) Schmid; daughter Debbie (Michael) Shane; four grandchildren, Jeremy (Christy) Schmid, Ryan (Tara) Schmid, Courtney (Brent) Hodgson and Jennifer (Chris) Peterman; and six great granddaughters, Morgan, Bailey, Avery, Brooklyn, Genevieve, Elisabeth; and his great grandson, Callen.

A memorial service will be held at Bella Vista Lutheran Church, 1990 Forest Hills Blvd., Bella Vista, Arkansas at a future date.
