Obituary

Darlene Jean Dykema, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, educator, nurse, counselor, and cherished member of her community, passed away at age 86 on February 14, 2024. She was born on March 13, 1937, and grew up in Orange City, Iowa, with her parents, Herman and Jennie Oordt, and siblings, Lori Luhrs and Darwin Oordt.

Known fondly as Dar by her circle of friends, Darlene lived an impactful life. Her journey after high school led her to pursue a career in nursing, where she dedicated her time to caring for others. After her nursing studies, she married Virgil Dykema in 1959, and soon after, they welcomed two sons, Dan and David. While in Orange City, they operated a ready-to-wear women's store called Dykemas.

In 1978, the Dykemas moved to Northwest Arkansas, where she returned to nursing. Darlene continued helping others by holding positions as a counselor, Dean of Women, and traveling as an ambassador for the Department of Education in Arkansas.

She surrounded herself with faith, friends, and family. Darlene and her friends could often be found playing bridge, taking long walks, or earning a tan at the pool. She enjoyed playing golf with her husband, volunteering her time with the church, and spending time with her extended family.

Darlene's life is a testament to the power of laughter, love, and generosity. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was a shining example of how to live life to the fullest by helping others.

She was reunited in heaven with her parents, Herman and Jennie Oordt; her husband, Virgil Dykema; and her son, David Dykema.

She is survived by her sister, Lori Luhrs; brother, Darwin Oordt; son, Dan Dykema and his wife, Lisa Dykema; grandchildren, Hanna Dykema, Sarah Hampton and her husband, Daniel Hampton, and John Dykema and his wife, Megan Dykema; and great-grandchildren, Will Dykema and Hallie Dykema.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at United Lutheran Church, 100 Cooper Road, Bella Vista, Arkansas.
