Obituary

Dorothy Elizabeth (Haugen) Klitzke, 79, of Bella Vista, Arkansas died May 2, 2022. She was born to Bennie and Marion (Fairweather) Haugen on April 20, 1943. She was raised on the family farm near Souris, North Dakota and attended elementary school in Souris and boarding school at Dakota Lutheran Academy in Minot, ND, graduating in 1961. DLA friends always held a special place in her heart. She later earned a degree in Home Economics at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota.

While at Concordia College, Dorothy got to know Harvey Klitzke on a trip to Washington, DC, and they were soon married on June 20, 1965. After college they were blessed with two daughters, Tammy and Sonja. After numerous transfers while raising the young girls they landed in Minot, North Dakota where she taught Home Economics and Bachelor Living at Minot High School. While there, Dorothy and Harvey were very active in the Jaycees where Dorothy held many offices including Editor and National Parliamentarian. Dorothy valued her time in Jaycees as a time of significant growth in leadership and lasting friendships.

In 1978, Dorothy and Harvey moved to Fargo, North Dakota where Dorothy spent many years working in the lighting industry as a salesperson whose strong leadership prompted promotion to a regional showroom manager. When Harvey landed a job in the Twin Cities she briefly continued to work in lighting before selling furniture at Dayton's Home Store.

In 1992 they made Bella Vista, Arkansas their home where Dorothy and Harvey would become active community members for the next 30+ years. There she also applied her sales skills at Chevy/GMC and was a proud Hummer specialist. She closed out her career as an inventory specialist to spend more time sewing, traveling, and serving at church.

Dorothy cherished her church family at United Lutheran Church where she was active in WELCA and served for 2 years as church council president. She was a beloved master of hospitality, preparing meals and pies for large groups, sometimes hundreds at a time, and lovingly creating the centerpieces for each table.

In addition to hosting events, Dorothy enjoyed reading, quilting, playing cards, cooking and being a grandmother. She enjoyed gifting quilts and wall hangings to family and friends. She had a lively, independent spirit and took pleasure in visiting friends and sharing stories.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved siblings Priscilla (Milo) Wattenford, Susan (Terry) Sletto, Russell (Sharon) Haugen, and Blaine (Margo) Haugen.

She is survived by husband Harvey, sister Cynthia (Mark) Resner; daughters Tammy (Dale) Jacobson and Sonja Kaye (Jake Glower); grandchildren Jordan Klitzke, Nicole Light (Caleb Laude), Michael Light and Everett Glower; numerous in-laws, and nieces and nephews.
