Obituary

Janice Ellen Vogel, 93, of Bella Vista, Arkansas passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2026. She was born on June 15, 1933, in Storm Lake, Iowa to Leslie H. and Pearl E (Gaffey) Chindlund.

She graduated from Hayes Consolidated School, Storm Lake, Iowa, in 1951. She participated in band, choral groups, debate and most of all basketball for five years on the high school girls’ team. She attended business school in Omaha, Nebraska for a short time and worked for Haines Jewelry.

Babysitting was Janice’s first job, working at a local drug store, and drove tractor on the bailer for her brother as her mother has arranged instead of detasseling corn.

As a result of a blind date, she ended up marrying Roy E. Vogel on June 1, 1952, at the Methodist Church in Storm Lake where she had been baptized and attended Sunday school and sang in the choir. They were married for 74 years.

Roy was in the U.S. Air Force at the time and stationed at Mather Air Force Base, so their first year of wedded bliss was spent in Sacramento, California where she worked as secretary to the District Manager of the Fuller Brush Co. When Roy was sent to Korea for a year, she moved back to Storm Lake and worked for the USASC. Their first son, Wesley Paul Vogel, was born in 1955, Brian William Vogel in 1957, and Lee Edward Vogel 1958.

In 1959, Roy joined the Iowa State Patrol, and they moved to Orange City, IA for four years. She worked for Dolman Manufacturing and did sewing repairs for the local cleaners. They then moved to Spencer, Iowa and she sold Holiday Magic Cosmetics and became a Welcome Wagon Int. hostess for four years. She then worked as front office manager for Spencer Cable Television for nine years and when the last boy graduated from high school she retired to a part-time job at Nieman Sewing Center. Her favorite of all jobs as she loved to sew clothing as well as making window coverings and bedding for their home. Creating with fabric was therapy and self-satisfying.

Janice was an eight-year member of the Hayes Girls 4-H club and was fortunate to be elected as county president her last year. Later she started a club in Storm Lake and served as a leader in the first year. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for 40 years, a member of Questers Int. Trail of Tears Chapter for 31 years and was a long-time member of several golf groups. She never had a hole in one but enjoyed being with several others while witnessing theirs. She was proud to carry her ISU Cyclone bag for all the relatives who had attended ISU. Jan and Roy were loyal members of 1st United Methodist Church in Bella Vista, AR for 35 years.

Preceding her in death were her parents and four siblings: Lois Margarite, Jean C. Grundmeier and husband Kenneth, Cecil “Bill” Chindlund, wife Betty, and Norma Gibbons (Cliff) and oldest son Wesley Paul Vogel.

She is survived by her husband, Roy Vogel; Andrea and Daniel Vogel; Brian and Geno Vogel of San Antonio Texas; Cedar and Wren Vogelschmidt; and Lee and Julie Schmidt of Spencer, Iowa.

A graveside service will be held in Storm Lake, IA for placement of Janice’s ashes at her and Roy’s headstone at a later date.
