Joel Edward Wood, 90, of Bella Vista, Arkansas, passed away on April 10, 2026. He was born on August 17, 1935, in Tucumcari, New Mexico.

Joel attended Eastern New Mexico University, where he excelled as a running back for the Greyhounds, setting school records and contributing to their only undefeated season. After beginning his professional life with Humble Oil, Joe felt a calling to ministry and went on to earn a Master of Divinity degree from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado.

He faithfully served as a Methodist minister across Colorado, West Texas, and New Mexico, for thirty years, eventually retiring as a district superintendent, in Albuquerque, NM.

In 2002, Joe settled in Bella Vista, Arkansas, where he enjoyed fishing and golfing; continuing to actively share his faith; serving as interim pastor for Gravette UMC and Farmington UMC.

Joel is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia Lou Stemple of Wickes, AR; their children: Joel Wood, wife Robin of Fort Sumner, New Mexico, and Greg Wood of Bella Vista, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Jason Wood, Leslie Carter, Lance Wood, wife Christina, Julie Lockmiller, husband Justin; and 8 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Highlands Church, 371 Glasgow Rd., Bella Vista, AR 72715.
