Obituary

Dr. Larry R. Trussell , 77, of Bella Vista, AR, passed away May 7, 2021 in Rogers, AR.  He was born August 20, 1943 in Humboldt, NE to the late Willis and Helen Trussell.  In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his brother, Charles.

Larry was a graduate of Courtland High School, Kansas where he met his wife of 57 years, Sharon. He earned two degrees from Fort Hays State University, Kansas. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in economics and accounting in 1965 and a Master of Science in economics and accounting in 1966.  He later graduated from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville with a PhD in economics.

He began his distinguished career in 1968 as an assistant professor of accounting and finance at Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti.  In 1971, he and his family moved to Boone, NC where he became an assistant professor in and the chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance at Appalachian State University.  In 1974, he left that position for the University of Nebraska Omaha.  It is here where he spent the majority of his career.  In 1974, he was named associate dean of the College of Business Administration, a position he held until 1979, when he became dean of the college, a position he held until 1992.  From 1992 until 1999 he was coordinator of international initiatives and, in 1999, began a phased retirement as a tenured professor.  He retired in 2005.

During his career, he had written more than $7 million in grants that have funded to provide equipment and other support for his university and to conduct exchange and other programs with universities in Romania and Moldova.  He was also a member of a college accreditation team that worked toward the accreditation of more than twenty business schools.  He was an arbitration judge, often handling cases involving New York stock exchange complaints. His awards include an honorary doctorate from the Alexandru I. Cuza University in Iasi, Romania, and being coroneted as a 33 rd -degree Scottish Rite Mason.

Larry was the Institutional Representative to the North Central Athletic Conference and the NCAA, past president of the Board of Directors of the Millard Education Foundation, past district governor for Rotary International and has served on the International Trade Committee for the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce.  He also served as vice chair of the Cass County Economic Development Corporation, is a past wise master of the Scottish Rite Chapter of Rose Croix, is the past chairman of the board for the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan YMCA, and is past chair of the Board of Directors of the Omaha Home for Boys.

Larry is survived by his wife, Sharon; his two daughters Christie Jamieson (Gary) of Hindsville, AR and Michelle Mowry (John) of Goddard, KS; his 6 grandchildren (Alix, Josh, Hunter, Caleb, Ania and Claire); and his three sisters Mary Lou Gorden, Betty Vandivier, Judy Moore.

To those who knew him, he will be remembered for his love of family; his quiet manner; his unwavering integrity; his great intellect; his prolific gardens; and his tremendous generosity.
