Melvin Johnny Fennell, age 95, of Bella Vista, Arkansas, quietly passed away on January 22, 2026, at Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 15, 1930, in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, to Cecil F. Fennell and Grace Aiken Fennell.

After graduating from high school in 1949, Melvin began his professional journey in the newspaper industry, taking on the role of teletype operator at the Associated Press in Oklahoma City.

With the onset of the Korean War, Melvin enlisted in the United States Navy on August 28, 1950. He served aboard the USS Tringa as a Quartermaster Second Class, demonstrating his commitment and service to his country. After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Navy on June 24, 1954, Melvin returned to the Associated Press, where he held various administrative and management positions. During this time, he furthered his education by pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from the New York University School of Commerce, Accounts, and Finance, graduating in June 1969.

In March 1969, Melvin made the decision to leave the Associated Press and co-founded his own company, ECRM. He played a pivotal role in developing one of the first commercially successful optical character recognition machines. Following several years as President and CEO of ECRM, Melvin retired from the business world and became a cattle rancher in Stratford, Oklahoma, a pursuit he enjoyed for 30 years.

At his core, Melvin was an entrepreneur with a passion for business and commerce. He enjoyed discussing computers and software development and valued the time spent with his family. The impact he made and the joy he brought to those around him are immeasurable, leaving behind a legacy that cannot be fully captured in words.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Grace; his wife of 51 years, Grace Ellen Sagebiel Fennell; and his sisters, Pauline Morgan and Geraldine Ricks.

He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia E. Moore and her husband Danny of Bella Vista; his grandson, Jonathan L. Moore and his wife Karen of Rogers; his granddaughter, Jennifer E. Dickerson and her husband Steven of Lowell; and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial at Corley Cemetery in Stratford, Oklahoma will be scheduled and announced later.
