Richard "Dick" Sterup, beloved husband, father, grandfather, coach, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, loyalty, laughter, and leadership.

Born August 28, 1933, in Nebraska to Harry and Olive (Carter) Sterup, Dick was the middle child between older brother Thomas and younger brother James. He grew up in Osceola, Nebraska, graduating from Osceola High School in 1950. His towering 6'2" frame earned him the nickname "Moose" during those years-an early hint at the larger-than-life presence he would carry throughout his life. He was also elected Homecoming King, a reflection of both his charm and character even in his youth.

Dick proudly served his country in the United States military from 1953 to 1955. Upon  returning home, he completed his studies at Hastings College in the 1956-57 midterm and later earned his master's degree from Kearney State College in 1962. His college years were filled with friendships, football, and unforgettable memories-his teammates affectionately called him "Big Bear"

On August 1, 1954, Dick married the love of his life, Barbara Brewer. Their marriage was a true partnership, filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Together, they raised three children-Greg, Kathy, and Linda-and celebrated 66 years of marriage in 2020. Barbara passed away on May 30, 2021, after a courageous journey with dementia

Dick dedicated much of his life to education and athletics. He began his career teaching and coaching at Kimball County and Bridgeport High Schools. From 1962 to 1968, he taught and coached football at the University of Sioux Falls. Known for his booming voice, bear-like growl, and fierce loyalty, Dick built relationships that lasted long beyond the final whistle.

After coaching, Dick transitioned into the insurance business, a career that led him and Barbara to live in Sioux Falls, SD; Ft. Scott, KS; and Indianapolis, IN before retiring to Bella Vista, AR. They also enjoyed spending their winters in Alice, TX, soaking up the sun and making new friends-something Dick was particularly good at.

With deep belief in serving community, Dick spent his early summers mentoring youth through the Sioux Falls Park district, later becoming a board member at Central Valley Golf course in which he helped develop it into an 18 hole golf course and two years as President of the Dakota Relays. Dick was an integral part of his church community serving as a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Sioux Falls, SD and Bella Vista AR.

To his grandchildren, Grandpa Dick was a lovable paradox. He "growled like a bear" but was "one of the kindest souls," always smiling, ready to lend a hand or tell a story. He loved to golf, drove with a lead foot, and had no fear of Arkansas hills or curves.

Dick often said, "I've never been to a place where I didn't have a good time" — a philosophy that reflected his genuine zest for life and uncanny ability to make every place and every moment brighter.

He will be deeply missed by his children Greg (Carol) Sterup, Kathy (Tom) Duba, and Linda (Larry) Youngren, seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, extended family, former players, and countless friends whose lives he touched.

In every community he called home, in every team he coached, and in every laugh he shared, Dick left a mark that won't soon fade.

A celebration of Dick's life will be held at 2:00 pm on August 2, 2025, at the First Presbyterian Church of Bentonville AR, with reception to follow. This will be the time to share stories and his legacy will be remembered — as big, warm and unforgettable as man himself.
