It is with great sadness that we are announcing the passing of Vern William Sutter, age 93, of Rogers, Arkansas. He passed peacefully on April 5 ^th , 2022, at Circle of Life Hospice, Bentonville, Arkansas.  Vern was born February 13, 1929, in Lincoln, Nebraska to George and Helen (Goertz) Sutter.

Vern and his three siblings grew up on the family dairy farm in College View, Nebraska. After high school Vern enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin and Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. On leave while at Fort McCoy, he accompanied one of his army buddies to Rochester, Minnesota where Vern met his future wife, Mary Schrader, who was employed as a lab technician by the Mayo Clinic. In 1952 Vern and Mary were wed in her hometown of Northfield, Minnesota. Soon after they were married, they started a family in Lincoln, Nebraska while Vern was attending college at the University of Nebraska. He received his BS in Civil Engineering in 1956 and packed up Mary and their first three children and moved to Des Moines, Iowa where he began his 30-year career with Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Company, they added three more children to the mix. Just one of the highlights of working for PDM was Vern's active involvement of the erecting of the St. Louis Gateway Arch. Eventually the job took Vern, Mary, and their youngest to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania when he became a vice president with PDM in charge of the welding department. After retirement from PDM they moved to Tennessee where Vern continued his career at the American Welding Institute for another 10 years.

With children all grown, the next step towards retirement brought Vern and Mary to Bella Vista, Arkansas where they enjoyed playing cards with friends, trips in their motorhome, golfing, and outings with the Mercedes-Benz Club of America - Ozark Section, which Vern helped found in 1998. Vern was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He continued to do part time consulting work on various projects for a few years. After 50 years of marriage, he lost Mary in 2004 to cancer. Vern continued to travel, visiting his children and grandchildren.

Vern found happiness again with his second wife, Oleatha (Poland) Gaston. The two first met back in high school in Nebraska. In 2008 they were married in California, where Oleatha had lived for 50 years, then made their home in Bella Vista. The two of them were always traveling and exploring. Another heartbreak for Vern as Oleatha passed in 2015.

Vern was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mary Louise Sutter; his second wife, Oleatha Sutter; his brother, Paul Sutter; and his sister, Ruth Sutter.

Survivors include his brother, Clair Sutter of Phoenix, Arizona; Vern and Mary's children; son James (Gloria) Sutter of Texas, daughter Jacqueline Sutter of Iowa, daughter Heather Russell of Colorado, son Randall (Michelle) Sutter of California, son Wayne (Anne) Sutter of Texas, son Richard (Linda) Sutter of Minnesota; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at United Lutheran Church in Bella Vista, Arkansas, Friday, May 6th, 2022 at 2:00 PM.
